Hot Trends In The Hudson Valley for Today's Kitchens

As a Realtor, I see the latest trends in architecture and design everyday by viewing everything from renovated to  high end new construction homes here in the Hudson Valley. Here's what's definitely hot now:

Free Style  People are spending more and more time in their kitchens, styles are moving away from the all-or-nothing "fitted" look of a continuous counter. Look for freestanding pieces of furniture or features with furniture like qualities, such as a cabriole leg holding up a kitchen counter. These details won't be fussy but will further the idea that the kitchen isn't just for practical cooking, but is for living.

Artistic Upgrades  Almost anything goes with the ongoing effort to customize the kitchen. Now range hoods can be works of art. They are beautiful as well as functional; you can customize a hood with panels of your choosing. You can replace cupboard doors with accent doors. You can have a new back splash by applying DIY stainless tiles or installing a ready-to-hang piece of tile art. You can go from boring to dramatic, outdated to trendy, in just a few minutes.

Going Green  Now there are more ways you can go green in the kitchen with eco-friendly products. There are energy-efficient dishwashers (that use less water than when you wash by hand), to environmentally sound flooring options made of reusable wood and tiles. .

Organic  Organic shapes are in, so forget straight lines and right angles. Rounded shapes are visually pleasing; they also encourage a more natural circular flow of traffic. You’ll never bump into a sharp corner again.

Asian Fusion  There is a strong Asian influence in the kitchen nowadays where Asian cooking is all the rage. In the bathroom, there is nothing like Zen comforts to help you relax. Look for drawer pulls resembling bamboo, built-in teriyaki grills, and Japanese-style sliding pantry doors in the kitchen.

Drawer Designs  There are refrigerator drawers and dishwasher drawers, and now there is the microwave drawer. The microwave now comes in a drawer. What's the big deal with having drawers in the kitchen? The kitchen has become the main area of the home, there's a move to break up the big expanses of appliances and to cut out the clutter.

High Tech  With advances in technology there is an oven that can be programmed to keep your food cold until it's cooking time. You have the control to change the cooking directions from your office computer. If you don't have enough freezer space, you can turn a fridge drawer into a freezer in no time. There are toilet seats that rise on their own when they see you coming and cleaners to clean your shower when you are not around.

Built-Ins  Convenient and sleek, built-ins are two must-haves in today's kitchen. Think of steamers and strainers, high-end coffeemakers, professional ice machines and wine coolers, knife racks, spice holders, ring holders, fondue pots, ice beds for shrimp and so much more.

Glass Acts  In today’s kitchen, glass is everywhere. It can be made from recycled and Depression-era glass tiles to opaque glass on cook tops, refrigerators, and cabinet doors. Light fixtures add light and drama when you use glass mosaic tiles and Venetian glass.
